There are many different types of door handles,including latches, bars and knobs. They vary tremendously in design,form and materials. They are all used to open doors. There are manystyles to choose from. From contemporary to the more traditional andin a variety of colour and design. The earliest doors are about5,000 years old. Door handles became necessary after the intentionof the pivot. Pivots are best known as hinges. There are many hingedesigns as well as handles.
The simplest handle is a projection on theopposite side of the hinge. Doors can have centre pulls or finds ora pivot point on the other edge of the door, using first and thirdclass lever principles.
Door handles have been depicted in paintings asfar back as the first century CE and are centrally placed rings. This later evolved into the modern door knocker. Bars and bracketswere used to seal the door and kept them from unwanted opening. These large crossbars, were used to secure doors, where replaced bysliding bars. There was a handle attached to the bar and penetratingthrough a slot in the door or it was used as a pivoting bar, latch,that could be dropped into a matching slot on the door.
